Humble beginnings in Alberta, Canada

Suki’s story begins in the vast Canadian wilderness of the rocky mountains in Alberta.

Marti (short for Martina Gutfreund) and her partner Kenny Hildebrandt, avid travelers and nature enthusiasts, adopted Suki after their previous 19-year-old feline companion passed away.

They were determined to find a cat capable of adapting to their adventurous lifestyle so it could join them on their outdoor escapades. They chose a Bengal – known for their energetic, playful nature and their strong desire for interaction with their owners,

On March 28, 2017, Suki entered their lives, and from that moment on, they became an inseparable trio.

How Suki Became a well-behaved adventure cat

Suki turned out to be extremely curious, energetic, and bold. She not only embraced outdoor life, she thrived in it.

Her love for outdoor activities and her zest for life turned her into the perfect addition to their adventurous family.

But one might wonder how a cat could be so well-behaved during outdoor adventures.

The secret lies in Marti’s dedication and training efforts. She invested considerable time in leash-training Suki from a young age, teaching her to respond to commands. She spent ten minutes at a time working with Suki indoors, using treats to reward her for good behavior. The treats were the best way to motivate her.

Today, Suki loves wearing her leash and eagerly awaits her next outdoor escapade.

Marti emphasizes the importance of positive associations during training. Suki’s excitement upon seeing her leash by the door is a testament to the success of Marti’s efforts.

Always putting safety first, Suki’s owners make sure to have a cat harness, leash, and kitty backpack ready for her. When traveling internationally, they carefully follow the rules and requirements of each country to keep Suki safe and comfortable.

When asked how she gets those pretty pictures of Suki, Marti explained that her cat just likes to sit and take in the scenery, so that part is pretty easy. She also sets her camera to take shots quickly with a fast shutter speed, which helps capture good moments even if they’re brief.

Taking pictures of Suki in action requires some planning though, especially since she expects treats as “payment” for being a model.

Despite the challenge of getting candid shots, Marti and Kenny always make sure Suki is wearing her harness, even if they edit it out later.

Internet sensation

Marti initially shared Suki’s pictures on her personal Instagram account. However, she saw how much people loved these cat photos, so she made a separate account, and her fans joined in.

Suki’s Instagram account reveals a world-traveling cat with a penchant for exploration. From her native Canada to the diverse landscapes of Europe and South America, Suki has visited 13 countries across two continents – inlcuding Mexico, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, Germany, and many more.

Her love for nature is evident as she joins her humans on canoe rides and hikes.

Marti takes her time to make each picture look great. After choosing a photo, she uses editing tools like Adobe’s Photoshop and Lightroom to make it even more beautiful, almost like adding a bit of magic to it.

It clearly paid off because Suki’s Instagram account now has over 1.8 million devoted followers.

Despite her fame, Suki remains approachable and loves interacting with her followers.

However, Marti strategically plans their adventures in the early morning to allow Suki to enjoy the outdoors without being overwhelmed by the attention from fellow hikers.

Of all the countries Suki the Adventure Cat has visited so far, Croatia and the Czech Republic seem to be her favorites.

But Suki also likes exploring Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta’s badlands, which is a dry place where she can easily blend in with the burnt-orange rock formations.

Marti shares, “You can always tell which places excite her by how much she wants to walk, and she was an unstoppable force while we were there.”

She even walked two and a half miles once before climbing into her backpack for a rest.

Suki’s mission and impact

Marti’s mission goes beyond showcasing Suki’s adventures. She aims to inspire cat owners to embrace the outdoors with their feline companions. Challenging the stereotype of lazy cats, Suki proves that with proper training and attention, cats can be intelligent, well-behaved adventure buddies. She has inspired numerous cat owners to spend quality time with their pets outdoors, fostering a stronger bond between humans and their feline friends.

Marti is proud of Suki’s accomplishments and hopes that their journey encourages others to explore the world with their cats.
