Interview with author Travis Nelson

What inspired you to write a book about your cat Sigrid?

Travis: We’ve impacted a lot of people’s lives all over the world, and as a result, people have become curious about our story. A bike-riding cat is one thing, but our journey involves moving across the world, being seriously impacted by the pandemic, and finding joy even in the middle of our struggles. We’ve had a lot of requests to expand on our story and write a book, so hopefully, people will enjoy reading it!

What can readers expect from Sigrid Rides? How would you describe the type of story it is?

Travis: The story covers all of Sigrid’s life from when I first adopted her up to the present day, as well as a bit of background about who I am and how I’ve ended up as a full-time ā€œcat cyclist.ā€

Tell us about the heartwarming moment when you first met and adopted Sigrid.

Travis: After doing some genealogy research and tracking down a previously unknown branch of the family in Norway (and visiting them!), I thought that my next cat ought to be a Norwegian Forest Cat. So I tracked down a breeder and hit the jackpot with Sigrid! My great-great-great grandmother was named Sigrid!

What were your initial impressions of Sigrid before adopting her?

Travis: Not too much… the breeder sent us a couple of videos and at one point indicated that she might be hard of hearing, but that’s about it. Of course, I discovered that she was completely deaf not too long after getting her.

How has your life, and Sigrid’s, changed since you both met?

Travis: She has always been a lot braver and more curious than my other cat (a Bengal named Ylva), so right away, we were going on adventures; walks around the block, picnics in the park, and so on. It was a good excuse to get outside more, especially since I was working from home even before the pandemic.

Can you share a cute or funny detail about Sigrid’s character? Does she have any favorite travel destinations or places she dislikes?

Travis: She’s really obsessed with squirrels, so she always loves going through parks.

Where can readers find more about your adventures with Sigrid on social media?

Travis: Most of our social links can be found at linktr.ee/sigirides. We post compilations and sometimes longer form videos on YouTube, which are popular!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Travis: I had a look at the Traveling Cats Facebook page and noticed you studied at VUB in Brussels! I did as well, from 2005 to 2010! At Vesalius College, the English-speaking private school attached to VUB.
