Where to stay in Lesbos: hotels that feed and care for stray cats
The Greek islands are home to large populations of stray cats—Lesbos included. That’s because neutering, adopting, and caring for cats isn’t yet as common in Greece as it is in countries like Belgium, the Netherlands, or Spain. But thankfully, that’s slowly starting to change.
More and more hotels on Lesbos are making a real difference. They don’t just tolerate stray cats—they care for them. Some allow the cats indoors for shelter and safety. Others feed them daily, even during the winter months when the hotels are closed and empty.
Here at Traveling Cats, we love supporting businesses that are kind to animals. That’s why I’ve put together this list of hotels on Lesbos that go out of their way to help the island’s stray cats. I’ve either stayed in these places myself, or they were recommended to me by the Lesvos Stray Dog Cat NGO.
So, if you want your next holiday to support more than just your own relaxation, read on.
Hotels in Skala Kalloni
If your plan is to see as much of Lesbos as possible, Skala Kalloni is one of the smartest places to stay. Because it’s close to the center of the island, you won’t spend hours driving every time you want to visit a different village or beach.
Don’t expect a bustling resort, though. Compared to places like Petra and Molyvos, Skala Kalloni is much quieter, especially in the evenings.
Also, it’s the best base on the island if you’re coming to see Lesbos’ famous wetlands and birdlife.
Hotel Pela
- Type: Traditional 2-star hotel
- Price Category: Budget-friendly

- Description: Pela Hotel is a small, family-run hotel in Skala Kalloni. It offers a peaceful atmosphere with simple, comfortable bungalows and a lovely garden setting. The hotel sits about 600 to 700 meters from the beach and a short walk from the village center. You can relax by the pool, enjoy homemade Greek meals, and play with kittens around the property.
- Pros: Peaceful surroundings away from other hotels, delicious food, and a large swimming pool.
- Cons: It’s a bit farther from the beach.
- Cat-o-meter: The owner of Hotel Pela is the person everyone on Lesbos Island goes to whenever they need someone to take care of stray cats and dogs. There are always litters of kittens at the hotel, and the owner makes sure that as many animals as possible receive the medical care they need.
Pasiphae Hotel
- Type: Family-run resort hotel
- Price category: Budget to mid-range

- Description: Pasiphae Hotel combines modernized rooms with a large swimming pool, pool bar, restaurant, and landscaped gardens. It is especially popular with birdwatchers because of its proximity to the island’s famous wetlands. The beach and village center are only a short walk away.

- Cons: The swimming pool is quite deep for young children and breakfast variety can be limited during longer stays.
Aegeon Hotel

Hotels in Molyvos
If you only visit one place on the island, make it Molyvos. It’s easily the most beautiful place on the island, and you can spend hours wandering its narrow streets, climbing up to the castle, and finding little corners with views over the harbor.
The only drawback? The beaches aren’t the reason to stay here. They’re perfectly fine for a quick swim, but if you’re dreaming of long, sandy beaches, you’ll probably end up driving to Petra or Anaxos instead.

Orfeas Studios Molivos
- Type: Traditional budget hotel
- Price category: Budget-friendly

- Description: A cozy, family-run hotel in the Greek countryside, just a 15 to 20-minute walk away from Molyvos Old Town. Orfeas features a handful of small bungalows, a swimming pool, and a bar. My partner and I absolutely loved our stay here.

- Cons: Small rooms, minimal amenities
- Cat-o-Meter: Orfeas is currently home to two cats that are a familiar presence near the swimming pool and garden areas. The owners take care of them year-round.
The Olive Press Hotel

- Description: The Olive Press Hotel occupies a beautifully restored olive oil factory directly on the seafront in Molyvos. - Pros: The hotel enjoys one of the best locations in Molyvos, with the beach, restaurants, and old town all within easy reach. You’ll also appreciate its historic character and beautiful sea views.

Sea Horse
- Type: Small family-run hotel & taverna
- Price category: Mid-range

- Description: You can’t beat the location of this small, family-run property. The traditional stone building sits right on the harbor in Molyvos, along the waterfront promenade. It has views over the fishing boats, the sea, and the hilltop castle above the town. From the hotel, it’s an easy walk into Molyvos Old Town, where narrow cobbled streets lead up to cafés, small shops, and the castle.
- Pros: Unbeatable harborfront location, stunning views, friendly family-run atmosphere, excellent on-site restaurant, within walking distance of Molyvos Old Town. Many rooms come with balconies facing the harbor.
- Cons: Can be noisy due to harbor nightlife and restaurant activity. The rooms are basic and some lack privacy on balconies. No pool or resort-style amenities
- Cat-o-meter: The hotel also runs a taverna and bar on-site, which serves as a lively gathering spot throughout the day and evening for both humans and cats – so many cats. Meals are enjoyed right by the water.
Aphrodite Hotel
- Type: A larger, family-run beach resort
- Price category: Budget to mid-range

- Description: This is a larger, traditional hotel right beside the Aegean Sea. Set in gardens of olive trees and palms, it offers a relaxing, natural atmosphere. It features a spacious swimming pool, a sauna, tennis courts, and a seaside taverna, making it one of the more luxurious options in the Molyvos area. Because it’s a 15 to 20-minute walk from Molyvos Old Town, Aphrodite Hotel runs regular shuttle buses throughout the day to take guests back and forth.

- Cons: Breakfast is pretty average.
- Cat-o-Meter: This is a cat lovers’ paradise! Lots of cats roam around here—some even join you on a sun lounger by the pool. The owners care for the stray cats, feeding them and letting them take shelter during bad weather.
Hotels in Petra
The beach is one of the best on Lesbos, and when you’re done swimming, you can simply walk into town and choose from dozens of tavernas and cafés.
It’s one of the easiest places on the island to stay because almost everything is within walking distance.

Alma Hotel

- Cat-o-Meter: The 10+ cats at Alma Hotel in Petra are some of the happiest on the island. They relax on lounge chairs in the lobby, soak up the sun, and get along great with the staff. The team always makes sure they’re fed. Even in winter, when the hotel is closed, a caretaker stays on-site to keep the cats fed and warm. For these cats, Alma Hotel is a safe and loving home.

Hotels in Eftalou
Eftalou has some amazing hotels. Outside of that, there really isn’t much going on. If you’re looking for lively streets, lots of restaurants, or somewhere to wander in the evening, you’ll probably be disappointed.
On the other hand, if you’re happy spending a good part of your vacation by the pool or on your hotel terrace, Eftalou is a great choice. It also works well if you have a rental car, since Molyvos and Petra only a few minutes away and the rest of northern Lesbos is easy to explore.
Sunrise Resort Hotel

- Description: Akti Hotel is a family-run hotel, managed by Dimitra and her son Theo. They make sure the atmosphere is warm and welcoming so that everyone feels at home. The hotel features approximately 30 rooms, each equipped with modern amenities and private balconies or patios. There’s also a seasonal outdoor pool, a children’s pool, and a poolside bar, all set within a tranquil garden environment. Akti Hotel is situated just a short walk from a pebble beach and offers shuttle services to the nearby town of Molyvos.
- Pros: The breakfast is varied and includes many local products. The owners are also really kind and welcoming.
- Cons: The rooms vary in quality and style; some are more modern, while others can feel a bit dated.
- Cat-o-Meter: Three dogs and two cats call the hotel home, and they’re free to wander and relax wherever they like. As the owners say, “If you don’t like animals, it’s best to choose another hotel.” Guests are also welcome to bring their own pets.
Hotels in Anaxos
If your idea of a great vacation is spending most of the day on the beach, then Anaxos is a great fit for you. The sandy beach is the reason people stay here, and it’s one of the nicest on Lesbos. Walk a few minutes from your hotel, spread out your towel, order lunch from a beachfront taverna, and repeat the next day.
The village itself is small, so don’t expect lots of shopping or sightseeing.
