The Sunrise Resort hotel in Eftalou is the biggest and one of the top hotels on Lesbos island. It’s also cat-friendly, with quite a few cats and kittens roaming around the place.

A cat-friendly hotel

Cats abound on the island of Lesbos. However, cats are usually not welcome in hotels.

The Sunrise Resort Hotel in Eftalou, however, is currently home to several families of cats: one mom with four kittens, one mom with one kitten, and one male with female couple.

These felines call the hotel their home, even though the tourists are the ones who feed them.

Sometimes the cats are by the pool, sometimes near the rooms.

The hotel is perched on the side of a hill, consisting of small buildings, which means there are plenty of stairs and small gardens where you can find cats scattered around as well.

The adult cats are social, but the kittens are a little shy. They dare to approach the tourists, but they don’t like to be touched.

By the way, did you know that you can adopt stray cats from Lesbos island?

About the Sunrise Resort Hotel

The Sunrise Resort is one of the largest hotels in Lesbos. It consists of several small buildings with each four apartments offering superb views of the Aegean Sea. The hotel has two large pools, a traditional tavern, a bar, a hot tub, a gym, a sauna, and a playground.

It maintains a higher standard and price than the average hotels here on the island, and it adheres to international standards, rather than being a typical small hotel, which is what you will usually find in Lesbos.

Nestled amidst stunning natural surroundings, this serene retreat offers a memorable experience that blends comfort, breathtaking views, warm hospitality, and… lots of cats and kittens.

The spacious rooms are equipped with a telephone, air conditioning, satellite TV, a minibar, and a hairdryer. Some rooms also come with a kitchenette.

The food is decent at the Sunrise Resort Hotel. However, on the island of Lesbos, it’s always better to eat outside. Eftalou Tavern offers some of the best food and cats in Lesbos.

Around the resort

As the hotel is close to the sea and surrounded by nature, most people go here for the calm and silence. Others, such as me, book the Sunrise Resort hotel for the hotel cats.

The only downside is that there is not much to do in Eftalou, apart from the hot springs, which is a 17th century domed bathhouse adjacent to the sea. They are well worth your time, though.

Eftalou is also a bit further away from Molyvos, which is by far the most beautiful part of the island. However, there are regular shuttle buses that bring you to Molyvos and back.

A direct bus line goes from Eftalou to Petra as well.

However, to get the most out of your stay in Lesbos, I recommend you rent a car so you can visit some of the more difficult-to-reach highlights such as the fishing village Skala Sykaminia, the Monastery of Ypsilou, and Anaxos beach.

Update

I really enjoyed the Sunrise Resort Hotel the year I went, but the hotel was almost empty then because of the 2015 migrant crisis. Now, it is always fully booked, making it a bit more impersonal.

The cats are still the same as several years ago. There are always one or two families of cats wandering around the hotel.
