Catsby, the 14-year-old book shop cat, has found his true calling at the independently owned Second Edition Book Shop in Davie, Florida. But it hasn’t always been this way. Catsby’s journey from a life of misery and neglect to becoming the beloved guardian of the bookstore is a heartwarming tale that captures the transformative power of love and compassion.
Catsby’s early years were marked by old age, irritability, poor health, and a profound sense of misery during his stay at the shelter. Danielle Joy Whatley, an ardent animal lover, recalls the challenges that Catsby faced: “He was older, incredibly unfriendly towards other animals, and carried with him a heavy burden of health issues and emotional baggage.” Given these circumstances, it was not surprising that Catsby would be overlooked by potential adopters at the shelter.

A new home at the Second Edition Book Shop
Recognizing the unique needs and potential of cats like Catsby, Danielle knew that her book shop would be the ideal sanctuary for him. The tranquil environment of the Second Edition Book Shop in Davie, Florida, offered a peaceful retreat where Catsby could find solace and companionship among the pages of countless books.
When Catsby arrived at the book shop, his health issues were a cause for concern. He required extensive eye surgery due to a rare condition called Entropion, which caused the edges of his eyelids to roll inward. Danielle shares, “He was constantly living in discomfort, which probably contributed to his grumpy demeanor.” However, once Catsby received the necessary medical attention and his eyes were restored, a remarkable transformation took place.
Within the welcoming embrace of the Second Edition Book Shop, Catsby’s true nature emerged. He thrived and blossomed under the care and attention of the shop’s customers.
Danielle joyfully remarks, “I don’t think an hour goes by where he’s not with somebody. Catsby eagerly roams the aisles, following people, and affectionately rubbing against their ankles to make sure they know he’s there.”
Catsby’s endearing personality and warm presence have made him a beloved figure among the store’s visitors, particularly retirees who are unable to have cats of their own. Regular patrons of the shop make it a point to visit and shower Catsby with treats and toys, forming a strong bond of affection. Catsby, in turn, remembers his favorite customers and greets them by the door, creating a sense of familiarity and comfort for all who enter.

- Take the exit onto I-95 N toward Ft. Lauderdale.
- After approximately 9 miles, take exit 20 for FL-824/West Hallandale Beach Blvd.

I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming story and am so sorry this bookshop closed in 2017! I so wanted to visit the bookshop and meet Cats by in person and the wonderful souls that adopted him, as it happens I adore cats and books! We are in process of moving to Florida
