Colca Canyon is located in southern Peru, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Arequipain. It’s famous for its natural hot springs, its condors flying by at close range, and its archeological sites. But many tourists who go on the three-day long trek through Colca Canyon also make a stop to greet the local celebrity. Her name is Gemma, and she’s a unique cat with odd-colored eyes that lives in one of the Canyon’s few houses.
Because of its striking eyes, one of a different color than the other, it’s hard to miss this cat. Its odd gaze gives it a mysterious, almost magical vibe that draws in visitors from all over. Over time, the odd-eyed cat has become something of a must-see. Many travelers now make it a point to stop by Colca Canyon, hoping to spot the famous kitty and maybe even share a moment or a photo.
So while Colca Canyon offers plenty of reasons to visit, don’t be surprised if one of your favorite memories ends up being a quiet encounter with its most photogenic resident.
