For me, Maine will always be synonymous with Stephen King novels. With its fog-drenched towns, dense forests, crumbling Victorian houses, remote coastal villages, and long, shadowy winters, it’s easy to see why the Pine Tree State serves as the perfect backdrop for so many of King’s eerie tales.
Ironically, despite King being a well-known cat lover (he wrote Pet Sematary, Sleepwalkers, and Cat’s Eye, after all), Maine has surprisingly few cat cafes—among the lowest numbers in the country. That may be due to its rural landscape, low population density, and the fact that many Maine residents already live with cats at home, especially in more remote areas where adoption rates are high and animal shelters are already well-integrated into local communities.
Still, the state made its cat cafe debut in 2023 with the opening of MEow Cat Lounge in Westbrook, just outside Portland.
So if you’re on the hunt for a relaxing spot to sip a warm drink and snuggle with some adoptable kitties, here’s everything you need to plan your visit right here, from addresses and hours to events and reservation tips.

MEow Cat Lounge in Westbrook
The MEow Cat Lounge partners with 11 rescues from across the state of Maine, ranging from Houlton to Kennebunk. All cats are fully vetted, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered before arriving. If you’re thinking about adoption, you’ll work directly with the rescue the cat came from.
You can choose from a variety of visit lengths, including a quick 25-minute blitz or longer options such as 50-minute, 2-hour, 3-hour, and full-day passes.
