Are you looking for cat cafés in South Dakota?

The Mount Rushmore State isn’t exactly a feline-filled paradise when it comes to cat cafés. In fact, there are only TWO in the entire state!

Why? Blame it on the small population, tricky business regulations, and the simple fact that not every town is ready for the glorious combo of coffee and cats.

But don’t worry—if you’re craving some purr therapy with your latte, we’ve got you covered.

Welcome to The Cattitude Café in Sioux Falls and Coffee and the Cats in Rapid City!

These are the only places in South Dakota where you can sip a cappuccino while making a new four-legged friend.

In this guide, we’ll give you all the details—addresses, opening hours, reservation info, menu highlights, and what makes each café special.

So, if you’re ready for a pawsome adventure, keep reading!

Coffee and the Cats in Rapid City

  • Address: Coffee and the Cats, 315 B E Saint Patrick St, Rapid City, SD 57701, United States.
  • Opening hours: Open daily from 08:00 am to 06:00 pm.
  • Price: It’s just $5 for a 30-minute visit, and all proceeds go toward keeping the kitties happy and cared for.
  • Reservations: The café area is separate from the cat lounge—called Kitty Cove. If you just want to grab a bite and watch the cats from a distance, you can without a reservation. But you need one if you want to see the cats up close, especially since the Kitty Cove fills up fast.
  • Menu: Coffee and the Cats doesn’t slack on the menu. Breakfast includes avocado toast, banana split yogurt bowl, and a variety of breads with toppings. Lunch features soups and sandwiches, and there’s a solid selection of cakes, pastries, and snacks. Drinks go beyond the usual, with mocktails and hot cocoa, plus an impressive lineup of specialty coffees with cat-inspired names. Try the Bengal (cardamom and honey jasmine latte), Russian Blue (honey lavender latte), Maine Coon (maple apple latte), Sphynx (rose lavender latte), or many others. There are plenty of options.

You’ll usually find about four cats in the Kitty Cove at any given time. The space is small and designed for calm interaction, so they keep the number low, and the lineup changes as cats get adopted.

The good news is that you can adopt the cats you meet there. All of them come from the Humane Society of the Black Hills, and the café works closely with the shelter to help match cats with new homes. Adoption fees are handled through the humane society, and the café sometimes sponsors cats to help cover those costs.

The cats themselves arrive at the shelter from many different sources, such as owner surrenders or strays, and the café hosts them until they find homes.

Coffee and the Cats also hosts special events to make the experience more fun. They’ve held things like yoga sessions with cats and children’s activities in the summer.

  • The food menu has a little more variety—breakfast options include overnight oats, waffles, bagels, yogurt parfaits, and toast boards. If you’re stopping by later in the day, you can grab a salad, charcuterie board, or a sandwich. Plenty to choose from whether you’re just grabbing a quick snack or settling in for a while.

The cat lounge of The Cattitude Café is home to around a dozen adoptable cats from the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, plus one permanent feline resident: Darla. She’s a chocolate-colored cuddlebug who isn’t up for adoption but is more than happy to soak up all the attention.

The space is set up to be as fun for the cats as it is for visitors—think plush pillows, climbing towers, cozy beds, and plenty of toys to keep everyone entertained.

If you fall in love with one of the adoptable cats (which is very likely), you can apply to adopt through the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.
