Where is The Goa Cat Cafe?

The Goa is located in the heart of Canggu, one of Bali’s busiest neighborhoods, known for its coworking spaces and fantastic selection of restaurants.

It sits on Batu Bolong Street, the main road that connects Canggu to the beach. Right next door, you’ll find Black Sand, one of the largest breweries in the area, where a lot of people come to have drinks and food at all hours of the day.

If you’re planning on visiting The Goa, you’ll have plenty of other things to do and try nearby, and you can even walk around the area a little bit. Bali is usually not walkable at all, but Batu Bolong Street has sidewalks and plenty of little shops, boutiques and cafes to try, so you’ll always find plenty of things to do.

From the outside, the cafe is pretty hidden, since there are no windows where you would be able to see the cats. Luckily, there are almost always employees standing at the entrance, letting pedestrians know about the hidden cat cafe. You can recognize them by their cat ears and uniforms.

What is The Goa Cat Cafe?

The Goa is a cat cafe that only has Polydactyl Maine Coons. Polydactyl cats have rare genetic mutations that have more than the regular amount of toes you would find on a normal cat. Ernest Hemingway was famously fond of these many-toed felines, and The Goa shares the same obsession.

They host between six and twelve cats every day at the cafe, which visitors can pet, play with and even feed.

At night, The Goa becomes Ore, a popular karaoke bar and late-night spot. Luckily, the cats are safely in bed at their off-site home by this point, so you won’t have to worry about any feline ears being damaged by bad singing.

It is quite strange to see the cafe space transform, though. During the day, it’s filled with friendly cats who love to jump on the tables and explore every square inch of the cafe. At night, it becomes a busy karaoke bar with people singing their hearts out and having plenty of drinks.

If you have a cat allergy, definitely don’t go to the karaoke bar, you’ll be sneezing all night.

Is The Goa Cat Cafe ethical?

It can be a bit difficult to gauge how ethical animal cafes are since you don’t always know what’s going on behind the scenes. In my experience, the cats at The Goa are treated very well, and you can tell that the staff truly cares about them. Everyone on site is always very knowledgeable about Maine Coons, specifically polydactyl cats, and is happy to explain their genetics and why they’re so special.

All the cats live in homes off-site and not at the cafe itself and are only taken there during the day. Not every cat goes to the cafe every day as far as my understanding goes, which seems reasonable.

The space is designed so that the cats have areas where they can retreat and take a break if they need to. Usually, The Goa is not extremely crowded, so the cats aren’t overwhelmed by too many visitors.

However, taking cats back and forth every day is not ideal, of course, and it’s difficult to label a place as ethical without knowing the living conditions of the cats in their homes.

Another thing to note is that many cat cafes focus on rehoming cats and adoption, making them a charity with a good cause. However, The Goa is a for-profit organization that breeds Maine Coon cats, which can be a questionable practice if not done ethically.

There are other cat cafes worth supporting in Indonesia, such as LUNI Lombok or Cafe Kuching in Gili Trawangan for example, whose profits go towards vet care and feeding street cats. But, if you’re looking for a fun day of petting Maine Coons, The Goa is still a good spot to choose, you just need to know what to expect.

From my personal perspective, the cats were treated well at the cafe and seemed happy without being stressed. When it comes to the ethics of cat cafes, The Goa is definitely among the better ones, as the cats are treated well.

What kind of cats can you see at The Goa?

The Goa only has Maine Coons, and almost all of them are polydactyl, which means they have more than the normal 18 toes a cat would usually have.

There are no other cat types at The Goa, but occasionally, there are older kittens or adolescents. The maine coons come in different color types ranging from black to tabby, calico, ginger, to pure white.

Is The Goa also a karaoke bar?

The Goa is a cat cafe by day and a karaoke bar by night. The cats are not present for the karaoke, which would be far too stressful for them, but both events are held in the same space.

How much is the food and drinks at The Goa?

The Goa Cat Cafe is a relatively affordable place to visit, and prices are reasonable for Bali. A full English breakfast costs approximately US $5, banana pancakes are US $3.50, a croissant is US $1.90, and a sandwich is around US $3.80.

A coffee costs around US $2.20, and an iced tea is US $1.30. Their smoothie bowls, which are highly recommended, cost US $3.50, which is a fantastic deal.

The cafe struggles occasionally with people coming in to see the cats without ordering anything, which is a real shame, considering the prices are so reasonable. Definitely make sure to at least get a drink if you happen to come by.

For US $2.20, you can even buy a delicious Royal Canin meal for your new feline friends. If the cats are acting a bit shy during your visit, this is a great way to get closer and make friends.

When is the best time to go to The Goa in Canggu?

As mentioned, the cat cafe is rarely very crowded, so you can stop by pretty much any time of day. The early morning is usually best when the cats are awake and ready to interact. In the afternoon, many of them get sleepy and retreat into their own areas, so you might not get as much playtime.

Our review of The Goa Cat Cafe in Canggu

Overall, this is a great cat cafe to visit in Canggu, and you’ll love the friendly Maine Coons who love attention from visitors.

The food and drinks are great and very reasonably priced, so you won’t have to worry about spending too much when you visit The Goa.

The space is a good size, and we love that the cats have areas to retreat and get away from humans if they need to. The cafe has no windows, which can be a bit strange at first, but it helps keep the cats calm and feeling safe without experiencing too much from the traffic and loud noises coming from the outside.

One improvement is the fact that this cafe isn’t actively involved in adoptions and cat rescue, which is so important in Bali. The area struggles with an influx of stray animals, and cats often do not receive as much attention as dogs often do.

We would love to see more initiative from The Goa, to support a good cause and not only the breeding of Maine Coons.

Other cat cafes nearby

If you want to cuddle even more cats in Canggu, we highly recommend also visiting The Odd Cat Bali, which is located just a ten-minute motorbike ride from the Goa. They run a cat adoption and cat boarding service, so the cats here aren’t only Maine Coons, but a mix of almost any type of cat you can imagine.

While their cafe is smaller and not as modern, it’s a fun place to visit if you want to spend some time with a cat or ten. They often have kittens, and the only downside of visiting The Odd Cat, is that you might just be tempted to adopt a cat or take all of them home while you are there.

How to support stray cats in Bali

While you might not be able to support cat rescue by visiting The Goa in Canggu, you can still do some good if you’re a cat lover who wants to support cats in need in Bali.

Villa Kitty and The Odd Cat are the two main cat charities in Bali, and in Lombok, LUNI Lombok is also a fantastic organization to support.

Villa Kitty lets you sponsor cats, which is a great way to support them if you are a tourist and cannot adopt a furry friend during your time in Bali. Their website has a lot of cats with their names, details and pictures which can be sponsored, so it’s a more personal connection than simply donating.

Of course, all of these charities accept donations and are in desperate need of support. Dogs are much more popular pets in Bali, so cats are often neglected and forced to live on the streets. They need our help and we highly recommend you support them during your time in Bali.

Another fantastic charity is the Bali Pet Crusaders, who sterilize stray animals and pets of families in need all around Bali. They do this for both cats and dogs and their work is incredibly important to get one step closer to controlling the stray cat population.

A sterilization costs just US $14, which allows you to help for very little money.

Conclusion: Is visiting The Goa Cat Cafe worth it?

The Goa Cat Cafe is a great place to visit if you’re in Canggu and want to spend some time with cats. There isn’t a whole lot to do in Canggu, so if you’re running out of temples and rice fields to see, cuddling with some cute cats is the perfect way to spend a morning.

Definitely have breakfast or lunch here – the food is really worth it. And don’t forget to count the toes on the resident cats. You might just be surprised how many these beautiful felines actually have.
