Pip the Beach Cat was once a wounded and abandoned stray. Now, he’s a famous spokes-cat for underserved children and seniors. With his own book and a charitable mission, Pip has become nothing short of a local celebrity in his hometown, Ocean City in Maryland.
From wounded stray to Ocean City celebrity: the inspiring tale of Pip the Beach Cat
Pip’s early days as a wounded stray kitten
Pip first appeared as a tiny kitten at the Berlin Christmas Parade, the Ocean City Police Department, Winter Fest OC, and a few local restaurants.
A kind-hearted grandmother noticed him and started caring for him. When she had to move, Laura Meadows, a high school student and family friend, stepped in.
Laura’s family couldn’t keep Pip, so her older sister Emily and her husband offered to take him in “temporarily.”
At first, they planned to bring Pip to the humane society. But the shelter was full, so Pip stayed with the Meadows family instead.
Emily quickly realized there was something special about him.
Her first focus, however, was getting him healthy. Pip’s eyes were severely inflamed—almost completely shut—and he was very dirty. She also worried about his hearing, since he didn’t respond to calls or noises. A vet visit revealed that his ears were fine, and once cleaned, Pip could hear everything around him. Emily was thrilled.
Embracing the beach life
Pip loves spending time at the Ocean City beach, where he’s become a familiar sight.
He enjoys chasing seagulls, digging in the sand, and playfully running after leaves. His adventurous streak even takes him surfing on a boogie board, wowing everyone who watches.
Local reporters noticed his beachside antics and soon dubbed him “Pip the Beach Cat.” This made him a beloved figure in Maryland.
If you visit Ocean City, there’s a good chance you’ll meet this feline celebrity—and he’ll probably want to say hello.

From stray to superstar

In May of 2019, Pip achieved another milestone: he published his first book, Pip’s Guide to Ocean City: Volume One.
The book introduces children to the sights and wonders of Ocean City, whether they’re planning a trip or remembering past visits. Filled with colorful illustrations and fun storytelling, it captures the spirit of the beach town and creates lasting memories for young readers.
