The vibrant country of Morocco is not only known for its rich history, diverse landscapes, and bustling markets but also for its unique relationship with cats. Photographer Lisa M. Collard, creator of the calendar “Cats of Morocco,” shares her experiences of encountering these feline companions during her travels in the country. In this article, she explores the special bond between Moroccans and their beloved cats, shedding light on the cultural significance and compassionate treatment of these furry friends.

Marrakech cats: guardians of the streets
Morocco, a predominantly Muslim country, holds cats in high regard, with the Islamic faith emphasizing kindness and respect for animals. The people of Morocco love their cats and tolerate having them around more than any other culture I’ve experienced, and after two years of full-time travel, I saw quite a few. Contrary to some cultures where street cats are often disregarded or mistreated, in Morocco, these feline inhabitants are not only tolerated but also cared for by the community.
During my three months in the country, it was so hard to not want to take many of these cats back home, though it was clear that even the street cats were well taken care of. This was never more evident than on the streets of Morocco, particularly in the medinas or old quarters of the cities where cats are a common sight. I never once saw anyone chase or harm a cat, and there were piles of food for them left all over, particularly at the markets where, as an American, I had to get used to seeing meat on display out in the open. It wasn’t uncommon to see cats staring at the butchers with hope in their eyes.
Friendly cats
The majority of the Marrakech cats were very friendly and would come right up and ask for love. They are accustomed to human presence and interaction. This friendly behavior is likely a result of the cultural respect and care given to cats in Morocco.
Just like this cat in Marrakech, I thought these felines were indeed, ‘lucky’.”
Blending in
My photography often captures the enchanting moments when these cats blend into their surroundings, bringing a touch of mystery and charm to the vibrant atmosphere.
In Marrakech, the piles of wares for sale are so vast it’s sometimes easy to overlook the cats that are often scattered in among them. But even in the midst of a sensory overload, the feline inhabitants of Marrakech manage to captivate with their beauty and grace.
Feeding the stray cats of Marrakech
The streets of Marrakech are adorned with piles of food left out for these feline friends, a testament to the care and concern shown by the Moroccan people. Even my boyfriend, Shaine, who is a huge cat lover, could not resist the mew of the tiny kittens and took it upon himself to feed them sardines outside our riad in Marrakech.
