Christmas is all about giving, and more often than not, those who have the least are the ones who give the most.
In the Belgian city of Dinant, at the entrance of the Church of Our Lady (Collegiale Notre-Dame), you will find two humble souls, Ivo and Yan.
They don’t have much in terms of possessions, but they do have a family: their dog Kenzo and Tchoutchou, a tiny cat with a big attitude.
Together, the four of them remind every passerby that the true spirit of Christmas isn’t found under a tree but in acts of love, loyalty, and sacrifice. Ivo, Yan, Kenzo, and Tchoutchou are that spirit.
Meet Ivo, Yan, Kenzo, and Tchoutchou
A family of four
Ivo and Yan sit quietly most days at the foot of the Collegiale Notre-Dame, the grand Church of Our Lady that towers over the river in the postcard-perfect town of Dinant, Belgium. The Gothic stone church is a popular stop for tourists, but for Ivo and Yan, it’s more than a landmark—it’s home.
But they are never alone. Kenzo, a loyal dog with a heart as big as the sky, sits by their side. Next to him is his best friend, a cat named Tchoutchou, who doesn’t seem to know—or care—that dogs and cats are “supposed” to be enemies.
This little group has formed a bond that goes deeper than comfort or companionship. It’s family. And in this family, the pets come first.
“We’re so very grateful for our pets,” Ivo tells me, gently rubbing Kenzo’s ear. “We’d do anything for them. First, we think about their wellbeing, and only then do we eat.”

Kenzo and Tchoutchou’s friendship
Kenzo the dog, was the one who set the right example.
“Six months ago, Kenzo found a tiny, three-week-old kitten in the bushes—alone, trembling, and on the brink of death,” Ivo says. “He refused to leave it behind. We had no choice but to bring the kitten along and to bottle feed it until he was grown enough.”
“We didn’t plan to take in another animal,” Yan admits. “But Kenzo just wouldn’t move. He kept nuzzling the kitten, whining. That’s when we knew we had to help.”
The two men named the kitten Tchoutchou and began bottle-feeding him every few hours. It wasn’t easy. Money was tight, food was scarce, and warmth was hard to come by. But they made it work. Somehow, love stretched further than necessity.

The true spirit of Christmas
In a season full of excess, it’s easy to forget what matters. Yet, the way these two homeless men took in a helpless kitten says so much about the kindness of the human heart.
When the world gives you little, you learn to give a lot.
Ivo and Yan don’t have much in the way of shelter or security. But what they do have is unwavering compassion, loyalty, and a sense of responsibility. They give freely, and in doing so, they remind us that kindness isn’t about abundance. It’s about intention.
This family of four truly teaches us the spirit of Christmas.
