You’ve probably seen photos of Riquewihr, France—the colorful shutters, cobbled lanes, and twinkling lights at Christmas. But what you don’t always see are the cats. Riquewihr is home to some of the fluffiest, sassiest, most pampered cats I’ve ever met. It’s impossible to resist capturing them posing in front of their half-timbered houses. And now I get to share both the cats and their adorable hometown with you.

Riquewihr things to do

Why are there so many cats in Riquewhir, France?

Did you know France ranks as one of the top cat-friendly countries in Europe? According to a recent study, French people really love their felines. And once you stroll through the cobbled streets of Riquewihr, it all makes perfect sense.

Here, cats lounge on wine barrels, sunbath on warm stone steps, or peek out from lace-draped windows.

And not in a stray, scrappy way. These cats are living the dream. They’re clean, well-fed, and have that smug “I’m basically royalty” energy.

Locals love them

I asked a shop owner about a particularly photogenic tabby curled up on a wine barrel, and she smiled like I’d asked about her grandchild. “C’est Gaston,” she said. “He’s been here longer than I have.”

Turns out, many of the cats in Riquewihr are unofficial mascots of local businesses. They lounge near wine cellars, curl up under café tables, or perch in boutique windows like they’re part of the display.

And the locals? They love it.

These cats are part of the community, and everyone seems to know them by name.

While wandering around, I spotted another kitty overseeing the menu of a restaurant. A small sign in the vicinity read: “Do not feed Minette—she already eats better than you do!”

Fair enough.

Photo ops everywhere!

So yes, this town doesn’t just look like a Disney set—it has the cast to match. So don’t forget your camera.

About Riquewihr

Riquewihr is straight-up storybook material. If Belle from Beauty and the Beast decided to leave her “provincial life,” I’m convinced this is where she would move.

Nestled in the Alsace region of northeastern France (basically where France and Germany meet), Riquewihr is tiny but charming. You can walk from one end of the village to the other in about 15 minutes… if you’re not stopping every 10 seconds to take photos.

A little history

This isn’t just some cute town that popped up on Instagram recently. Riquewihr dates back to the 13th century, and walking through it feels like stepping into a medieval painting. Back in the day, it was known for its winemaking (still is!) and for being a walled village that managed to stay remarkably preserved, even through World War II.

How to pronounce Riquewihr?

It’s pronounced like reek-veer or reek-vihr (either will get you close enough). The IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) spelling is s /riːkˈviːr/.  You have to pronounce the “r” in the name in the French manner, which is softer and closer to the back of the throat compared to the English “r.”

Why people love it here (besides the cats)

Riquewihr is regularly called one of the prettiest villages in all of France. That’s not just blogger hype—it’s an official label from Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, a real-deal association that ranks the most beautiful towns in the country. Think half-timbered houses in every pastel shade imaginable, tiny shuttered windows, and cobbled streets you’ll happily lose yourself in.

Every December, Riquewihr also turns into a full-blown winter wonderland. Its world-famous Christmas market blends Alsatian charm with centuries-old traditions. Think half-timbered houses glowing with lights, stalls tucked inside medieval courtyards, and local artisans selling everything from hand-blown glass to spiced Bredele cookies. Add in hot mulled wine made with Alsace’s own white wine and you’ve got a market that feels both magical and uniquely regional.

And speaking of wine… This is Alsace, which means white wine heaven. Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and more—all produced locally and available for generous tasting.

Best time to visit Riquewihr

If you’re chasing that holiday magic, come in December when the village glows with Christmas lights, the smell of spiced wine fills the air, and every corner feels like a snow globe scene.

But if you’re visiting Riquewihr to meet the cats, spring and summer are better.

Things to do in Riquewihr

1. Wander the Old Town

Start with a stroll through the postcard-perfect Old Town. Duck into the tiny alleys and cute little shops—you’ll find everything from handmade pottery to the fluffiest pastries.

2. Visit a museum

Check out the Musée de la Communication (which features vintage postcards and old-school telephones) or head up to the Dolder Tower Museum for epic views and a glimpse into medieval life in Alsace. Both museums are small and full of local character.

3. Taste the local wines

Stop by a tasting room like Hugel & Fils or Dopff au Moulin and try a crisp Riesling or floral Gewürztraminer. Many spots are family-run and love to share their wine wisdom with visitors.

4. Walk the vineyards

The views from the vineyards are stunning, and they’re just a short walk from the village. You’ll see rolling hills, vine-covered slopes, and maybe even a sunbathing cat or two. It’s peaceful, scenic, and the perfect way to walk off all that wine and cheese.

5. Eat like a local

Don’t leave without trying tarte flambée (Alsace’s answer to pizza), a big plate of choucroute, or something sweet like kougelhopf. Grab lunch or dinner at Wistub du Sommelier or cozy Au Dolder—both serve up hearty, authentic dishes with a side of local charm.

6. Snap a few castle views

While the castle itself is mostly ruins, the short walk up gives you dreamy views over Riquewihr and the surrounding vineyards. It’s peaceful, not crowded, and worth it for the photos alone.

7. Say hi to the cats

Because the cats are part of what makes this village feel so alive.
