With just around 2,800 residents, Riva Ligure is one of the smallest gems on Italy’s Ligurian coast. It’s perfect for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path adventure. The old town still retains its medieval street layout, with narrow alleys called caruggi that practically beg to be explored.

But what makes the town feel extra special is the presence of the cats, especially around the shoreline. They’re everywhere, and they only add to the town’s laidback vibe.

Welcome to Riva Ligure

Riva Ligure, an untamed haven in the Riviera di Ponente

Italy is known for its iconic travel destinations—Rome, Venice, Pompeii, Milan, and Positano often top the list. But beyond the famous hotspots lies a world of lesser-known treasures, and Riva Ligure is one of them. Tucked away along the stunning Riviera di Ponente in the Province of Imperia, this small seaside town offers something different.

Riva Ligure beach and the Torrente Argentina

Riva Ligure is raw, natural, and wild. On the eastern side of the Torrente Argentina, floricultural fields stretch right down to the shoreline. The sea sometimes washes ashore generous amounts of algae, covering the beach in a way that might seem strange to those expecting a perfectly manicured coast.

But this is exactly what gives Riva Ligure its soul. It’s not trying to impress—it’s just being itself. And for travelers who appreciate authenticity over polish, that’s a big part of its charm.

Small town, big personality

With around 2,800 residents, Riva Ligure remains delightfully low-key. There aren’t many beach clubs, tourist traps, or flashy attractions. Instead, the town invites you to slow down and soak in the simple pleasures—quiet streets, friendly locals, and the gentle rhythm of life by the sea.

What to see in Riva Ligure

While the town may be small, there are a few key spots worth exploring:

  • The Beach – Peaceful and natural, perfect for relaxing or watching the cats.

  • The Port – A small but charming harbor that adds to the town’s coastal vibe.

  • Torre Barbaresca – A historic watchtower with scenic views of the sea.

  • Chiesa di San Maurizio Martire – A beautiful church that reflects the town’s deep-rooted heritage.

Coastal cycle path

One of the more modern additions to Riva Ligure is the coastal cycle path, which follows the route of an old railway line. This scenic trail is ideal for biking or walking, offering stunning views and a peaceful way to explore the area.

Riva Ligure’s adorable cat kingdom

What makes Riva Ligure even more charming is the colony of stray cats that have made the beach their home.

This feline community likely started thanks to the local fishermen, who unintentionally helped create the perfect environment for the cats to settle in. These laid-back beach cats roam freely. They play in the sand, chase waves, or curiously watch passersby.

Their well-being is lovingly looked after by a small group of volunteers who make sure the cats are fed and protected. Even with limited resources, these kind-hearted locals go out of their way to care for their four-legged neighbors, making sure the cats of Riva Ligure live happy, healthy lives by the sea.
