You might not think of the Netherlands when you think of cat cafés… but oh, how wrong you’d be. Cat cafés in the Netherlands (or as the locals say, kattencafés Nederland) are some of the coziest you’ll ever curl up in with a cappuccino and a purring buddy.
The Dutch have absolutely mastered the art of gezelligheid (the Dutch word for cozy vibes), and they’ve extended it to their feline hangouts too — think warm lighting, vintage furniture, and cats who clearly run the place.
However, the whole “adoption café” trend you might know from the US — where every cat is a rescue up for adoption — hasn’t really caught on here yet. Most cats you’ll meet are permanent residents, living their best life surrounded by latte foam and adoring visitors.
But don’t let that stop you. With 23 kattencafés spread across the country, from Amsterdam to Groningen, you’re never too far from a cat-themed coffee break.
If you’re planning a trip, consider this your sign. Don’t leave the Netherlands without visiting at least one. Or three. Or all of them.
