Street cats of Doha
The street cats are one of the most loved sights of Doha’s Corniche. You’ll often see them stretched out on the stone fishing pier, watching the boats in the harbor. Street cats are an important part of Doha’s city culture. Back in the 1960s, Qatar brought in cats on purpose to control rats and mice around markets, construction zones, and busy neighborhoods. The rodent problem disappeared, but the cats stayed behind. With no predators and plenty of scraps in the trash bins, their numbers exploded.
These cats need your help
Even though the cats are the Corniche’s prettiest sight, they’re also the saddest part of Doha. Doha may be a city of wealth and luxury, but its stray cat population tells another story. Many are skinny, sick, and fighting to survive.
The city is rapidly developing and urbanizing, and this can cause displacement of the cats and an increased competition for limited resources such as food, shelter, and territory. Rapid urbanizing also exposes the cats to other dangers, such as traffic, toxins, and mistreatment.
There are no major shelters, limited rescue programs, no government support, and almost no adopters.
A few dedicated volunteers and expats feed the cats and treat the sick ones, but they can only help a fraction of the animals in need. These animals have little chance of finding a safe and healthy life.
Without more awareness and support, the problem continues to grow.
You don’t have to live in Qatar to help. Consider donating to organizations that work with local rescuers to feed, treat, and find homes for these cats. If you visit Doha, carry some cat food or water, because you’ll definitely run into a few furry friends who need it. Just be careful not to feed them near restaurants or places where it might not be welcome, because that can cause more harm than good.
