The one-eyed surfing cat is called Kuli. Alexandra Gomez and Krista Littleton found him as a fragile, undernourished kitten weighing a mere one pound, abandoned on the streets. Unfortunately, due to an eye infection, Kuli had to undergo the removal of one of his eyes, which inspired his endearing name, Nanakuli (or Kuli for short), which means “to look blind.”
While most cats display a natural aversion to water, Kuli defied the norm. His early experiences with frequent baths, necessitated by his health issues during his formative months, gradually acclimated him to the presence of water. Through these cleansing rituals, Kuli developed a familiarity and comfort with aquatic environments, setting the stage for his extraordinary journey as a water-loving feline.

Learning to swim: overcoming challenges
When Kuli reached around six months of age, Gomez and Littleton embarked on a new adventure with him. They began taking Kuli for walks on a leash, bringing him to the beach to explore.
During Kuli’s initial encounter with the water, Gomez and Littleton decided to let him float on the board near the shoreline, observing him with care as they paddled alongside. To their surprise, it didn’t take long before they were seeking out waves, teaching their feline companion how to ride them and swim.
Starting with small, gentle waves, Kuli gradually expanded his territory in the water. Gomez and Littleton noticed a remarkable improvement in Kuli’s skills as they continued their outings. With each consistent venture, Kuli grew more adept. Before they knew it, Kuli had mastered the art of both swimming and surfing, confidently conquering the waves with his unique feline grace.
The adorable feline is always protected and secure, donning a life jacket when necessary.

Over time, Kuli found his way up to his owners’ shoulders, which turned out to be an ideal spot for him. It was his own choice to settle in this position, where he can cruise along and share in their perspective.
