It was originally established as a port and trading center in the 16th century and became an important hub for the timber trade. The town grew in importance during the 17th and 18th centuries when it played a significant role in the Norwegian shipping industry.
One of the distinctive features of Risør is its charming wooden architecture. The town boasts a large number of well-preserved white wooden houses, giving it a unique and picturesque appearance. The narrow streets and alleys add to its quaint charm. The town even received the European Union’s Europa Nostra Award for its exemplary restoration and preservation of these historic buildings.
