How did Project Bay Cat come about?

Before Project Bay Cat was created in 2004, these stray cats were often ignored, with passersby expressing disapproval and muttering, “Someone should do something about them.”

Then one person realized she was “someone” and that she could help them. Soon, others came to the same revelation, creating a ripple effect of compassion.

Building a dedicated team and rallying the community took time and effort, but it was all worth it.

Today, the “Bay Cats” enjoy daily meals, essential spaying or neutering, vaccinations, and prompt medical care when needed.

The transformation is evident, as people no longer just walk by. Instead, they pause to appreciate the beauty of these cats, realizing the impact we can all have when we unite to assist animals in need.

A glimpse into the daily life of a Bay Cat

At the mere sound of volunteers’ food carts rolling down the path, the Bay Cats transition from deep slumber to full alertness in a blink. Then, they’re off, sprinting towards the source of their morning delight!

It’s undeniably adorable to witness their eager trot as they approach, ready to exchange greetings and curiously inspect the cart for the day’s breakfast treats.

One of the Bay Cats, Comfort, loves taking a morning jog down the trail in the fog alongside runners.

His motivation?

Not exercise, but the prospect of reaching breakfast first.

To facilitate the cats’ journey to their morning feast, the volunteers went above and beyond by constructing a special “cat bridge.” This ingenious solution arose when, during a wet season years ago, they observed that some Bay Cats were wading through water to reach their breakfast.

Building the bridge was no small feat – a long walk, heavy with cement blocks – but the volunteers embraced the challenge. The result? A beloved cat bridge that the feline residents absolutely adore!

In wet seasons, it serves its purpose perfectly, and during dry spells, the blocks absorb the warmth, creating ideal platforms for blissful cat naps.

That’s the power of love, teamwork, and some amazing volunteers.

After the final rays of sunshine disappear and all the runners and walkers head home, the Bay Cats emerge to welcome the twilight.

In this enchanting hour, the wind whispers solely for them. They alone savor the gentle sounds of water lapping on the rocks, relishing the uncomplicated tranquility of exchanging head-bumps with their feline friends.

It’s a magical moment reserved just for the Bay Cats, a testament to the serene beauty that unfolds when the world quiets down.

Stray cats need love, too

What are the biggest misconceptions about homeless cats?

Firstly, the belief that they can’t find happiness in human homes, a myth consistently debunked by the Bay Cats that become love-bug-couch-potatoes.

Secondly, the assumption that they always fight. Yet, the Bay Cats, all spayed or neutered and regularly fed, astound us with remarkable demonstrations of love – enduring friendships, acts of compassion, unwavering protectiveness, and head bumps that seem to last an eternity.

We could all learn a thing or two about the love these cats share with those around them.

For a dozen years now, Funny Girl and Diamond kick off their day with a gentle head bump, followed by a shared breakfast (often from the same bowl).

The remainder of their day is spent in tandem napping, mutual grooming, and observing the world together.

Freed from the struggles of searching for food, finding shelter, or enduring the stresses of raising kittens, they focus on the paramount pursuit of loving each other.

As for Bat, love ranks just as high on her list of priorities as her adoration for wet food.

And considering her enthusiasm for Fancy Feast, that says a lot.

Also take a moment to appreciate the cats’ glossy, velvety coats!

Generous donations of wet food from Project Bay Cat’s incredibly kind Facebook friends have not only filled their bellies but also encouraged the cats to indulge a bit extra, fostering the growth of thick, warm fur that keeps them snug on chilly winter nights.

With the unwavering support and assistance from everyone involved, these community cats stand among the healthiest and happiest on the planet. Their well-being radiates through the pictures, a testament to the collective effort that has truly made a difference in their lives.
