Brutus is no ordinary cat. While his feline peers nap, he is “working” at Morrisons supermarket in Saltney, England. This amiable tabby cat has made the supermarket his second home, much to the delight of both the customers and staff.
Are you ready to meet Brutus, the supermarket cat? Then let’s dive right in.
Meet Brutus, Morrisons’ supermarket cat
Les Williams, Morrisons’ store manager, affectionately describes Brutus as their “little resident cat.”
But Brutus actually lives across the road from the store. He just prefers to pass his days being patted and fussed over by Saltney shoppers.
“When he first started coming to the store, I thought ‘I have got to throw him out nicely.’ But now I’d end up doing it ten times a day,” said the manager. “Even if I wanted to move him on, I couldn’t because the customers love him. He’s certainly a local resident and a very popular one.”
A day in the life of Brutus the supermarket cat
Each morning at 08:00 am, Brutus waits at the entrance for Morrisons supermarket to open.
As soon as the staff and customers arrive, he puts himself to work. He takes it upon himself to patrol the aisles, ensuring that everything is impeccably in order.
He only goes back home when the doors of the supermarket close at 10:00 pm.

Brutus’ favorite aisle: the pets department
Most of the time, you can spot Brutus at the pets aisle.
With a keen sense of taste and quality, he assists customers in selecting the finest groceries for their beloved four-legged companions.
Beyond merely suggesting items, Brutus goes the extra mile – or perhaps we should say, the extra paw – because he accompanies shoppers on their shopping journeys. When he notices that the customers need more help, he jumps into their carts and makes rounds with them, a sight that is sure to bring smiles and laughter.
Brutus’s dedication to his “job” clearly knows no bounds.
A break from work
But even the hardest workers need a moment to recharge, and Brutus is no exception.
He is only heading home for the odd meal during the day, though.
But, preferably, Brutus takes a break inside his favorite Morrisons supermarket itself, especially when the sun shines through the window. In that case, he will position himself in the baby seat of one of the empty carts to take a well-deserved nap.

Concerned shoppers
It often happens that worried shoppers call the telephone number on Brutus’ collar tag.
They are then greeted by his personal answering machine, saying: “Thank you for calling about Brutus. I assume you found him in Morrisons car park and are concerned that he may be lost. He actually goes to Morrisons every day as I only live across the road. He goes under the bridge and across the stream, so he’s unlikely to cross the road. He will make his own way back home later. I really do appreciate your call and the fact that you care, so thank you. If you found him somewhere other than Morrisons, please leave a message so I know where to find him.”

Final thoughts
People don’t just bump into Brutus by chance anymore; they come in already knowing his name and hoping to spot him. What started as a local curiosity at Morrisons has turned into something much bigger, shared far beyond the neighborhood.
And the best part? None of it has gone to his head. Brutus still carries himself like any other cat, completely uninterested in fame and very focused on doing things his way.
2017 update
On January 16, 2017, Brutus passed away due to a three-year-long battle with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). He fell ill over the Christmas period, but despite a brave fight, he did not pull through. He went peacefully on a nice snuggly blanket in his kitchen. He has since be immortalized with a statue in his favorite Morrisons supermarket.
