Procida, an island of movies… and cats

Procida is the smallest of the Flegrean Islands off the coast of Naples in southern Italy. Unlike its more popular neighboring islands, Capri and Ischia, it is still largely untouched by tourists.

One of the highlights of Procida is the colorful fishing village Corricella. This is the beating heart of Procida and quite possibly one of the cutest fishing villages I’ve ever laid eyes on. Sherbet-colored buildings are stacked like Legos against a cliffside. Fishing boats bob gently in a turquoise harbor. And the soft hum of daily life unfolds at a slow, coastal pace.

Oh—and cats. So many cats.

Corricella doesn’t just look like a movie set, it was one too. This little slice of coastal heaven has served as the backdrop for movies like Il Postino (1994) and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). And once you see it, you’ll understand why. The whole place feels like a living movie set.

Mornings with the cats of Corricella

Besides being an island of cinema, Procida is also an island of cats. They love patrolling the neighborhood early in the mornings when the streets are still quiet. For the rest of the day, you will mainly find them snoozing in the shade.

The postcard-perfect harbor of Corricella is a must if you want to meet these feline residents. But it also offers an authentic glimpse into the traditional Italian village life, with its locals going about their daily routines.

Cats are everywhere here, and they’re the real stars of the show. They seem to know just how photogenic they are. They’ll pose next to brightly painted fishing boats or perch under laundry lines flapping lazily in the breeze.

As the fish of the day is being unloaded from the colorful boats, the cats wait, patiently, for the fishermen to share their morning catch with them.

By sunset, the scent of grilled seafood starts to drift from the waterfront restaurants. This is when the cats reemerge. They are hungry again, and they’ll try out their luck in the restaurants, attempting to snatch some fish or seafood from unsuspecting tourists. If you’re dining outside and feel a gentle tap on your ankle, than that’s just a furry local reminding you that sharing is caring.

The easiest way to reach Procida is by ferry from Naples. Ferries leave from Molo Beverello or Calata di Massa and take 30–60 minutes, depending on the type. Several companies operate year-round—check schedules online or at the port. Tickets can be bought in advance or on-site.
