We just got back from a stay at the Abbey of Reigny (Abbaye de Reigny), a unique bed and breakfast set inside a historic abbey. It’s about 20 km from the famous Chablis wine region, making it a great base if you’re exploring Burgundy.
The B&B offers a mix of rooms, all with private bathrooms and decorated in a 1930s style. Some even have balconies overlooking the garden, and many include cozy seating areas with original fireplaces.
Oh, and one unexpected highlight? The resident cat who acts like the real host — keeping a close eye on everything and everyone.
What it’s like to stay at the Abbey of Reigny in Burgundy
A short history of the Abbey of Reigny
You’ll find the Abbey of Reigny in the heart of Burgundy, France. Builders laid its foundations in the early 12th century on top of an old Gallo-Roman site, following the vision of a monk from Clairvaux Abbey. For centuries, the abbey played a key role in Cistercian life until the French Revolution brought that chapter to an end.
Today, the owners run the Abbey of Reigny as a bed and breakfast and event venue. However, you can still explore several well-preserved historic features, including a 14th-century refectory with a rare double nave and colorful medieval decorations.
Meanwhile, the old monks’ dormitory now functions as a grand 18th-century-style living room. There’s also a 17th-century dovecote on the property.
