Why stay at Monte da Vilarinha

Carrapateira is a small village located on the Algarve’s rugged west coast. It attracts hikers, surfers and anyone who loves windswept cliffs.

If you follow the winding road from Bordeira Beach down into the leafy valley of Carrapateira, you’ll arrive at Monte da Vilarinha.

It’s basically ten family-friendly living units, spread between three different houses, each with high bamboo-and-beam ceilings and terracotta-tiled floors.

The rooms

The rooms are cozy, comfortable, and full of rustic character. The combination of wooden details, natural materials, and traditional flooring fits perfectly with the landscape outside. The high ceilings make the rooms feel spacious, while the overall design keeps things relaxed and welcoming.

Many rooms also have private balconies, which can quickly become one of the best spots to enjoy your morning coffee or watch the colors of the sky change as the sun starts to set.

During the day, you can go hiking, biking, or horseback riding. Or you could stay at Monte da Vilarinha to get to know the resident cat.

Breakfast

This is one of the highlights of staying there.

If the weather is good—and in the Algarve it usually is—make sure you have breakfast outside, sitting by the pool with nothing but the sounds of nature around you.

Breakfast includes homemade jams, fresh bread, croissants, fruit, and other local products.

The resident cat

Now for the best part… Yes, Monte da Vilarinha has a resident cat.

She’s very much part of the atmosphere here, and if you’re lucky, she might join you for breakfast, lounge next to you by the pool, or follow you around in the gardens.

There are plenty of beautiful places to stay in Carrapateira, but Monte da Vilarinha is the only one with a furry welcome committee.

Sunset

In the evening, one of the best things you can do is to simply sit outside on your balcony to catch the sunset and watch the light slowly change over the valley.

Carrapateira’s remote location and minimal light pollution make it a perfect spot for stargazing as well.

Things to do nearby: Carrapateira and the Costa Vicentina Natural Park

Explore the Costa Vicentina Natural Park

Monte da Vilarinha sits in the middle of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, a protected stretch of coastline that runs for about 68 miles (110 km) along Portugal’s southwest coast.

If you’re planning to spend your days outdoors, you’re in the right place, because these offer some of the best hiking trails in Portugal. They follow the cliffs for miles, with Atlantic views almost the entire way. Along the way, you’ll encounter small beaches, sand dunes, rocky headlands, farmland, and low Mediterranean scrub.

You might spot some peregrine falcons overhead or white storks nesting on the sea cliffs. (It’s one of the rare places in Europe where they do that.)

The park is also home to remarkable biodiversity, with hundreds of native plant species and wildlife including otters, wild boar, and  the elusive Iberian lynx.

By the way, people have lived along this coastline for thousands of years, and you’ll still find traces of that history today. Traditional fishing villages, archaeological sites, small settlements, and small coastal towns offer a nice change of pace between hikes and beach visits.

  • Praia da Bordeira : This vast beach is not only the closest, but also the most dramatic. It has a wide stretch of sand backed by towering dunes.
  • Praia do Amado: This is one of Portugal’s best-known surfing beaches.
  • Praia da Arrifana:  This dramatic bay is framed by high cliffs and is very different from the other beaches.
