Cats around the world

Athens, Greece

cats of Athens

white cat in Athens Greece

Just like many other Greek cities and islands, Athens is overflowing with stray cats (and dogs). That’s because the concept of animals as pets is relatively new in Greece.

These photos are a tribute to the cats of Athens. It was inspired by the book The Complete Cats in the Sun by Hans Silvester.

I’ve been on vacation in Italy, and I’ve seen so many cats, most of these on Capri. I’ve made it my personal mission to photograph every cat I meet.

Frigiliana, Spain

black cat in Frigiliana

Frigiliana is one of the prettiest towns in Málaga, Southern Spain.

Its white-painted buildings, cobbled streets, and beautiful mountain and coastal views make it very picturesque.

The town is divided into two areas, but the one worth exploring is the historic center, where you’ll find Frigiliana’s attractions, restaurants, and shops.

Wander its streets, where you’re likely to see cats, buy local products like sugar cane honey, olive oil, and nuts, and have tapas on a rooftop terrace.

Frigiliana is a small town, so you don’t need to spend the whole day there. You can also visit the neighbouring town of Nerja, which has some of the best beaches in Costa del Sol.

Hemingway House in Key West, Florida

Hemingway House in Key West Florida

six-toed cat

If you’re interested in visiting cats around the world then you’ll love the six-toed cats at Hemingway House in Key West.

Currently, the facility is home to roughly 60 six-toed cats since Hemingway was originally given a white, six-toed cat from a local ship’s captain. That cat, Snow White, went on to have kittens and their descendents currently live on the grounds.

Today, the museum has an on-site veterinarian that monitors the health of the cats and performs routine procedures.

So, after enjoying a 30-minute guided tour of this iconic home with its lush gardens, say “hi” to one of these unique cats.

After all, a visit to this iconic museum is one of the best things to do in Florida since you can look at amazing photos and cool momentos from the life of this famous author.”

Kabul, Afghanistan

kitten from Kabul Afghanistan

This adorable kitten from Kabul, Afghanistan, is one of the least fortunate furry ones featured here.  It lives in a country with long-standing political unrest and armed conflict, resulting from the presence of various insurgent groups, most notably the Taliban. The withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces added a new dimension to the situation.

Lia, Greece

cats and hortensias

Cats Hortensia and Haroula are sunning themselves on the terrace of Dina Petsis in the Greek village of Lia, as they watch Dina prepare the bread called “prosphora” for lunch. Just before Dina slides it on a paddle into the bee-hive-shaped outdoor oven, she stamps the dough with a bread stamp. The square in the center presses out the letters “IC XC NIKA” which stands for “Jesus Christ Conquers”. She will later take the bread to church. The priest will bless it and he’ll cut out the square in the middle of the bread and mix it with wine for those who take communion. The rest of the loaf may be cut up for the antidoron, which is passed out at the end of the service. It’s an honor to bake the prosphora, and the cats are proud that their mistress was chosen, and that she’s the best cook in the village.

They’re sitting under hydrangeas – some of them planted in empty tins from feta cheese and olive oil that Dina uses in her cooking. They love watching the baking and the way the bread smells as it cooks. Greeks call the hydrangea flower “Hortensia” and that’s where the cat on the left got her name. Her sister is named Haroula, which means “Little Joy”. Learning to cook and eating Dina’s food are some of life’s many joys in Lia.
